Absolutely justified - if you see animal abuse as something funny, then you are sick in the head. I had such an idiot guy in college group, who thought it's "hilarious" how he can kick his dog and the dog "forgets" about it the moment he brings snacks.

Surprisingly, I had the same experience where I stood like a coward not saying a word but didn't laugh either. Instead my buddy was the one who punched the guy and got his ass fired. However...up to this day, I admired his courage and even said to him "you were more of a man than I was in that situation" and made him smile while looking for job - even let him crash at my place until he found a new one.
